Conforming (or "online conform") is the process of rebuilding an edited sequence using the original, high-resolution source media, replacing the low-resolution proxy files used during the offline editing phase. The conform is guided by the EDL (Edit Decision List) or XML/AAF file exported from the offline editing system, which contains the precise timecode information for every cut in the sequence. The conform is typically performed in a dedicated online editing suite or color grading system.
The assistant editor sends the EDL to the online facility: "We've reached picture lock on the offline edit. I'm sending you the EDL and the XML file. Please conform the sequence against the original 4K camera RAW files and let us know when it's ready for the color grade."
