QC / Quality Control (Lingo)

Definition

Quality Control (QC) is a rigorous, formal evaluation process that the final master files must pass before they are accepted by a distributor or network. A specialized QC facility or technician reviews the files for any technical errors (such as dropouts, macroblocking, or audio clipping), formatting issues (such as incorrect timecode or aspect ratio), and compliance with the distributor's specific delivery specifications. If a file fails QC, it must be fixed and resubmitted.

Contextual Usage

The Post-Production Supervisor reports an issue to the team: "The broadcast master for Episode 102 failed QC. The report flagged an audio peak at 12:04 that exceeds the network's maximum loudness specification, and a single frame of black at 24:15 that shouldn't be there. I need the re-recording mixer to fix the audio peak and the editor to patch the black frame, then we'll export a new master and resubmit for QC."
