Turnovers (Lingo)

Definition

In post-production, a Turnover refers to the process of exporting and delivering a specific version of the edited sequence (along with all necessary reference files and metadata) to another department for specialized work. Common turnovers include the "Sound Turnover" (delivering the AAF, reference video, and EDL to the sound department), the "VFX Turnover" (delivering the background plates and reference edits to the VFX vendor), and the "Color Turnover" (delivering the conformed timeline to the colorist). Managing turnovers accurately is a critical responsibility of the post-production management team.

Contextual Usage

The Post-Production Supervisor checks in with the assistant editor: "Have we completed the Sound Turnover for Episode 104 yet? The supervising sound editor is waiting for the AAF and the reference video. Please make sure you include the dialogue stems and the updated EDL, and let me know as soon as the files are uploaded to the Aspera server."
