In non-linear editing, a Bin is a container or folder within the editing project that holds and organizes clips, sequences, and other media assets. The term originates from the physical "bins" — large cloth or canvas containers — that film editors used to hang and organize strips of film during the editing process. In modern NLE systems like Avid Media Composer and Adobe Premiere Pro, bins are used to organize the project's media into logical categories (such as by scene, by character, by day of shooting, or by media type), making it easier for the editor to find and access the clips they need.
The assistant editor sets up the project structure for the editor: "I've organized all the media into bins by scene number. Each bin contains all the takes for that scene, with the circled takes (the director's preferred takes) at the top of the list. I've also created a separate bin for all the B-Roll and a bin for the music and sound effects. The project should be easy to navigate."
