In Point / Out Point

Definition

In a non-linear editing system, the In Point and Out Point are markers that define the beginning and end of a clip or a section of the timeline. The In Point marks the first frame to be included, and the Out Point marks the last frame to be included. Setting In and Out Points is the fundamental act of editing — by defining the In and Out Points of a clip, the editor specifies exactly which portion of the source footage will be used in the sequence. In Points and Out Points can be set with keyboard shortcuts (typically "I" for In and "O" for Out) for fast, efficient editing.

Contextual Usage

The editor demonstrates the editing process: "I'm going to set my In Point just before the actor starts their line — right here, on this frame. And I'll set my Out Point just after the line ends, here. Now I'll insert that clip into the sequence. The edit is clean — no extra frames at the beginning or end."
