Rendering is the process by which a computer calculates and generates the final output of a complex visual sequence. In video editing, rendering is required when a timeline contains effects, transitions, color corrections, or multiple layers of video that the computer cannot play back in real time. The rendering process creates a new video file (or a cached preview file) that can be played back smoothly. In 3D animation and VFX, rendering refers to the computationally intensive process of generating the final photorealistic images from a 3D scene.
The VFX artist tells the producer, "The render for the final battle sequence is going to take about 72 hours on our render farm. We need to start it today if we want to have the final frames ready for the color grade on Monday."
