Definition
A Codec (a portmanteau of "coder-decoder") is a software algorithm used to compress and decompress digital video and audio data. Different codecs make different trade-offs between file size, image quality, and processing requirements. Common video codecs include H.264 (widely used for streaming and web delivery), H.265/HEVC (a more efficient successor to H.264), ProRes (a high-quality codec used in professional post-production), and DNxHD/DNxHR (Avid's professional codec). The choice of codec affects storage requirements, editing performance, and final output quality.
Contextual Usage
The post-production supervisor specifies the deliverable requirements to the editor: "The final master needs to be in ProRes 4444 at 4K resolution. For the streaming delivery, please export an H.264 file at 1080p. And for the broadcast version, we need an MXF file with a DNxHD codec."
