In post-production, a Handle refers to extra frames of footage at the beginning and end of a clip, beyond the actual edit points. Handles are important because they give the editor and the online conform team flexibility — if an edit needs to be extended slightly, the handles provide the additional frames needed without having to go back to the original camera media. Handles are also important for VFX work, as VFX artists often need a few extra frames at the beginning and end of a shot to properly integrate their work. Standard handle lengths are typically 8, 12, or 24 frames.
The VFX supervisor specifies the requirements for the VFX plates: "I need all the VFX plates delivered with at least 24 frames of handle on each end. Some of our shots have very complex edge work, and we may need to extend the shot slightly during compositing. Without adequate handles, we'll be stuck with the exact edit points, which limits our flexibility."
