An Alpha Channel is an additional channel in a digital image or video file that stores transparency information. In a standard RGB image, there are three channels (Red, Green, and Blue) that define the color of each pixel. An Alpha Channel adds a fourth channel that defines the opacity of each pixel, from fully transparent (0) to fully opaque (255). Alpha channels are essential in VFX and compositing work, as they allow elements (such as a computer-generated character or a title graphic) to be composited over a background with precise transparency and edge quality.
The VFX artist delivers the composited elements to the online editor: "I'm delivering all the VFX shots with an embedded alpha channel in the EXR files. The alpha channel defines the exact transparency of every element in the composite, so you should be able to drop them directly onto the timeline over the background plates without any additional keying."
