LUT (Look-Up Table)

Definition

A Look-Up Table (LUT) is a mathematical formula that maps one set of color values to another. In post-production, LUTs are used in color grading to transform the flat, log-encoded footage from a camera into a specific visual look. A "technical LUT" (or "camera LUT") converts log footage to a standard color space (like Rec. 709) for accurate monitoring. A "creative LUT" applies a specific aesthetic look to the footage. LUTs can be applied in the camera (for on-set monitoring), in the editing software (for offline grading), or in a dedicated color grading application.

Contextual Usage

The colorist explains their workflow to the director: "I'm going to start by applying the technical LUT to convert the ARRI LogC footage to Rec. 709 so we can see what the image actually looks like. Then we'll build the creative grade on top of that. I've also prepared a few creative LUTs based on the references you sent me — let's look at those and see if any of them are close to the look you're going for."
