Color Space

Definition

A Color Space is a specific organization of colors that defines the range (or "gamut") of colors that can be represented in a digital image or video. Different color spaces have different gamuts — some are designed to match the capabilities of specific display devices (such as Rec. 709 for HD television or DCI-P3 for digital cinema), while others are designed to capture the widest possible range of colors for production and post-production purposes (such as ACES or ARRI Wide Gamut). Understanding color spaces is essential for maintaining color accuracy throughout the production and post-production pipeline.

Contextual Usage

The colorist explains the color management workflow to the post-production supervisor: "We're going to work in the ACES color space throughout the entire post-production pipeline. All the camera footage will be converted to ACES at the start of the grade, and we'll work in that color space until the final output stage, where we'll convert to the appropriate delivery color space — Rec. 709 for broadcast, DCI-P3 for theatrical, and sRGB for online."
