VFX (Visual Effects)

Definition

Visual Effects (VFX) are the various processes by which imagery is created or manipulated outside the context of a live-action shoot. VFX encompasses a wide range of techniques, including computer-generated imagery (CGI), compositing, motion capture, digital matte paintings, and particle simulations. VFX is used to create environments, characters, and events that would be impossible, impractical, or too dangerous to capture in camera. The VFX Supervisor is the creative head of the VFX department and works closely with the director to plan and execute the visual effects work.

Contextual Usage

The VFX Supervisor presents the VFX breakdown to the director: "We have 847 VFX shots in this film. The most complex are the underwater sequences, which will require a combination of practical underwater photography, digital water simulations, and extensive compositing. I'd like to discuss the approach for those shots in detail."
