The VFX (Visual Effects) Supervisor is the creative and technical head of the visual effects department, responsible for overseeing the execution of all digital effects in a production. They are involved from pre-production (planning how to shoot complex sequences), through production (ensuring the necessary data, reference photography, and clean plates are captured on set), and into post-production (managing the VFX artists and vendors). They work closely with the director to ensure the digital effects seamlessly integrate with the live-action footage and serve the story.
The director consults the VFX Supervisor on set: "We want the explosion to happen right behind the actors as they run toward the camera. Can we achieve this practically, or should we shoot them against a green screen and have your team build the explosion digitally in post?"
