A Matte Painter is a specialized digital artist who creates highly detailed, photorealistic backgrounds, environments, and set extensions that were not present during filming (or that would be impossible or too expensive to build practically). Modern matte paintings are often complex 2.5D or 3D environments created using a combination of digital painting, photography, and 3D modeling, allowing the camera to move slightly within the digital space.
