Matte Painter
Definition
A Matte Painter is a specialized digital artist who creates highly detailed, photorealistic backgrounds, environments, and set extensions that were not present during filming (or that would be impossible or too expensive to build practically). Modern matte paintings are often complex 2.5D or 3D environments created using a combination of digital painting, photography, and 3D modeling, allowing the camera to move slightly within the digital space.
Contextual Usage
The director reviews the concept art with the Matte Painter: "The futuristic cityscape looks incredible, but I want to add more scale to the background. Can we extend the matte painting to show a massive spaceport in the distance, with flying vehicles moving between the towers?"
