Compositor

Definition

The Compositor is the VFX artist responsible for the final assembly of a visual effects shot. They take all the disparate elements — the live-action footage, the computer-generated (CG) models, the matte paintings, the atmospheric effects (like digital smoke or rain), and the rotoscoped mattes — and seamlessly merge them into a single, believable image. A skilled Compositor ensures that the lighting, shadows, color, depth of field, and motion blur of all the artificial elements perfectly match the original photography.

Contextual Usage

The VFX Supervisor reviews the shot with the Compositor: "The CG creature looks great, but the integration with the background plate is a little off. The lighting on the creature's left side is too bright compared to the ambient light in the alley, and we need to add a bit more contact shadow where its feet touch the ground."
