Versioning

Definition

Versioning refers to the process of creating multiple adapted versions of a finished program or asset for different distribution platforms, territories, or audiences. For a feature film, versioning might include creating a theatrical version, a broadcast version (with different aspect ratio or censored content), an airline version (with content edited for in-flight audiences), and multiple international versions (with dubbed audio or burned-in subtitles). Each version must be carefully tracked and documented to ensure that the correct version is delivered to the correct platform.

Contextual Usage

The Post-Production Supervisor presents the versioning plan: "We need to deliver seven different versions of the film: the theatrical cut, the director's cut for the streaming platform, the broadcast version with the profanity edited out, the airline version with additional content removed, and three international versions with dubbed audio for France, Germany, and Japan. Each version has different audio and subtitle requirements, so please make sure the version control system is set up to track them all separately."
