DCP (Digital Cinema Package)

Definition

A Digital Cinema Package (DCP) is the standard format for distributing digital films to cinemas. It is a collection of digital files that contain the video, audio, and subtitle data for a film, encoded in a specific format (JPEG 2000 for video, uncompressed PCM for audio) and packaged in a way that can be ingested by digital cinema servers. DCPs are typically encrypted with a KDM (Key Delivery Message) that restricts playback to specific screens and time periods.

Contextual Usage

The post-production supervisor tells the delivery coordinator, "We need to deliver the DCP to all 500 cinemas by the end of next week. Please make sure the KDMs are generated for the correct screening dates and that all the technical specs are verified before we ship the drives."
