Closed Captions (CC) are text transcriptions of the audio content of a video — including dialogue, sound effects, and music cues — that are encoded into the video signal and can be switched on or off by the viewer. Unlike open captions (which are permanently burned into the image), closed captions are a separate data stream. They are a legal requirement for broadcast television in many countries, providing access to content for viewers who are deaf or hard of hearing. Closed captions must be accurately timed and formatted to comply with broadcast standards.
The Post-Production Coordinator flags a delivery issue: "The network's QC report came back with a fail on the closed captions. The caption file we submitted is in the SRT format, but the network requires CEA-608 embedded captions. I need to get the captioning house to convert the file and re-embed it in the broadcast master before we can resubmit."
