Critical Path
Definition
The Critical Path is the longest sequence of dependent tasks in a project schedule, which determines the minimum time required to complete the project. Any delay to a task on the Critical Path will directly delay the overall project completion date. Tasks that are not on the Critical Path have "float" — they can be delayed by a certain amount without affecting the overall project timeline. Identifying the Critical Path is a fundamental technique in project management, as it allows the project manager to focus their attention on the tasks that are most likely to cause delays.
Contextual Usage
The project manager presents the project schedule to the team: "The Critical Path for this project runs through the photography shoot, the retouching, and the final approval. Any delay to any of these three tasks will push back our delivery date. The copywriting and the design work are not on the Critical Path — they have about a week of float — so even if they run a little late, it won't affect the overall timeline."
