DAM (Digital Asset Management)

Definition

Digital Asset Management (DAM) refers to the systems, software, and processes used to organize, store, retrieve, and distribute digital assets — such as images, videos, audio files, documents, and templates — in a centralized, searchable repository. A DAM system allows organizations to manage their creative assets efficiently, ensuring that team members can quickly find the right version of the right asset, that usage rights are tracked and respected, and that outdated or unapproved assets are not used.

Contextual Usage

The creative operations director presents the business case for a new DAM system: "Currently, our assets are scattered across shared drives, email attachments, and personal computers. Team members spend an average of 30 minutes per day searching for files. A DAM system will centralize all our assets, make them searchable by metadata, and ensure that everyone is always working with the most current, approved versions."
