Online Edit

Definition

The Online Edit is the technical finishing phase of post-production, performed after the picture has been locked in the offline edit. During the online edit, the low-resolution proxy files used in the offline edit are replaced with the original, high-resolution source media (a process called "conforming"). The online edit is also where final visual effects are integrated, titles and graphics are added, and the sequence is prepared for color grading and audio mixing.

Contextual Usage

The online editor receives the conformed sequence and notes, "The conform looks clean — all the shots have matched up correctly to the original camera files. I've spotted a couple of shots where the VFX haven't been integrated yet. I'll flag those for the VFX team and we can drop them in once they're finished."
