The Assistant Editor is the technical backbone of the editorial department. They manage the massive volume of digital media generated during production, ensuring that every file is properly ingested, synced, organized, and backed up. They prepare the project files for the Picture Editor, create "bins" organized by scene and take, and handle all the technical exports (such as "turnovers") for the sound, color, and VFX departments. They also often perform preliminary sound design, add temp music, and assemble rough cuts of scenes for the editor to refine.
The Picture Editor asks the Assistant Editor for the day's dailies: "Have you finished syncing the audio and video for Scene 42? Please organize the bin by setup and take, put the circled takes at the top, and let me know when it's ready. I also need you to export an AAF of Scene 15 for the sound department."
