Offline Edit

Definition

The Offline Edit is the creative editing phase of post-production, typically performed using low-resolution proxy files rather than the original high-resolution camera files. By working with smaller, more manageable files, the editor can work faster and on less powerful hardware. The offline edit is where all the creative decisions about the structure, pacing, and content of the film are made. Once the picture is locked, the project moves to the online edit, where the proxy files are replaced with the original high-resolution media.

Contextual Usage

The post-production supervisor explains the workflow to the client: "The editor will be doing the offline edit using 1080p proxies. This allows us to work quickly and efficiently during the creative phase. Once you've approved the final cut, we'll move to the online edit, where we'll conform the project back to the original 4K camera files for the final color grade and delivery."
