A Dialogue Stem (or "D stem") is a separate audio mix that contains only the dialogue tracks of a film or video, without any music or sound effects. Stems are created during the final mix to provide flexibility for international distribution and re-versioning. The Dialogue Stem allows distributors in other countries to replace the original dialogue with a dubbed version in a different language, while retaining the original music and sound effects. The three primary stems are the Dialogue stem (D), the Music stem (M), and the Effects stem (E), collectively known as the "M&E" (Music and Effects) mix.
The re-recording mixer prepares the final deliverables: "In addition to the full mix, I'm going to deliver three separate stems — a Dialogue Stem, a Music Stem, and an Effects Stem. The international distributors will need the M&E (Music and Effects) mix to create dubbed versions in other languages. They'll replace the Dialogue Stem with their local language dub and combine it with the M&E to create the final mix for each territory."
