Dialogue Editor

Definition

The Dialogue Editor is a highly specialized audio professional responsible for cleaning up the production dialogue recorded on set, removing background noise, and preparing the tracks for the final mix. They painstakingly go through every line of dialogue, smoothing out volume differences, removing unwanted clicks, pops, and rustle, and replacing unusable lines with alternate takes from the production audio or with ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement). Their goal is to make the dialogue sound perfectly clear, consistent, and natural.

Contextual Usage

The Dialogue Editor updates the Supervising Sound Editor: "I've cleaned up the dialogue from the exterior cafe scene as much as possible, but there's a siren in the background that overlaps with the lead actor's key line in take 2. I'm going to pull the audio from take 4 and try to stitch it in, but we might need to flag that line for ADR if it doesn't match the performance."
