Fish-Eye Lens
Definition
A Fish-Eye Lens is an ultra-wide-angle lens that produces strong visual distortion, creating a wide panoramic or hemispherical image with a characteristic curved, convex appearance. Fish-eye lenses have an extremely wide field of view (typically 100–180 degrees) and create a distinctive barrel distortion effect in which straight lines appear curved. They are used for creative effect in music videos, action sports footage, and stylized narrative films, as well as for practical applications such as security cameras and scientific photography.
Contextual Usage
The director of photography proposes a creative approach for a drug-induced hallucination sequence: "I want to shoot the entire hallucination sequence with a fish-eye lens. The distortion will immediately signal to the audience that something is wrong with the protagonist's perception of reality. Everything should feel warped and unstable."
