The Director is the primary creative authority on a film or video production. They are responsible for translating the written script into a visual and auditory experience, guiding the performances of the actors, making decisions about camera placement and movement, and overseeing the overall creative vision of the project. The director works closely with the producer (who manages the business and logistical aspects of the production) and the director of photography (who executes the visual design). In commercial and advertising production, the director is often hired by the agency or brand to execute a specific creative concept.
After reviewing a performance that felt too theatrical, the director takes the actor aside for a quiet conversation: "I love the energy, but let's bring it down about fifty percent. This scene is about what's happening internally. The camera will find the truth in your eyes; you don't need to project it."
