The Casting Director is the professional responsible for finding and recommending actors for the roles in a film, television show, or commercial. Working closely with the director and producer, the Casting Director conducts auditions, manages the negotiation of actor deals (in coordination with the producer and agents), and presents options for every role from the lead characters to the smallest supporting parts. The Casting Director has an encyclopedic knowledge of available acting talent and is skilled at identifying actors who are right for specific roles.
The director meets with the Casting Director to discuss the lead role: "I've seen the initial submissions, and I think we need to look beyond the obvious choices. The character needs someone who can convey both great intelligence and deep emotional vulnerability simultaneously. Can you bring in some actors who might not be the obvious choice for this kind of role? I'd rather be surprised."
