An Animatic is a sequence of storyboard images edited together in time, often with a rough audio track (scratch dialogue, music, or sound effects), to create a preliminary moving version of a scene or commercial before actual production begins. It is a step beyond a static storyboard, allowing the director and creative team to evaluate the timing, pacing, and flow of the planned shots. Animatics are particularly common in advertising production and animation, where they are used to present concepts to clients and to refine the edit before expensive production resources are committed.
The agency presents the animatic to the client before the production shoot: "We've put together this animatic from our storyboards so you can see how the 30-second spot will flow. The timing of the cuts and the pacing of the voiceover are all represented here. Once you approve this, we'll go into production knowing exactly what we need to shoot."
