Boom Operator

Definition

The Boom Operator is a member of the sound department responsible for physically operating the boom microphone — a highly directional microphone mounted on the end of a long, telescoping pole (the "boom"). The boom operator's job is to position the microphone as close to the actors as possible, without allowing it to enter the frame of the camera. This requires a combination of physical stamina (holding the pole overhead for extended periods), technical knowledge (understanding microphone polar patterns), and spatial awareness (knowing exactly where the camera's frame line is).

Contextual Usage

After reviewing a take, the sound mixer tells the boom operator, "Your levels are great, but the DP says the boom is dipping into the frame on the wide shot. Let's find a different angle of attack so we can stay out of the frame while still getting close enough to the dialogue."
